Switching to Canadian Made Tri-Art Paint

I’m an artist in London, Ontario. With all the **** that has been coming out of the U.S., my family has been striving to buy made in Canada. So, I decided to buy Canadian made paint, and I have not been disappointed. I not only purchased this set, but I saw completely new colours I hadn’t seen before! I am especially loving the Sea Foam and Tumeric. I love the consistency. I don’t have to add water because the paint is smooth and spreads easily. And I was so surprised that the coverage has been excellent. I am so happy I have started the change over to Tri-Art and look forward to my next order! I had already posted my delight of Tri-Art on my FB page, to let people know! If you need any photos, let me know! Thanks for making such a fabulous product here in Canada!

Where has Tri-Art Transparent Permanent Orange been all my life?!

After hearing that a well known Canadian artist used Tri-art acrylics, I had to try them for myself. Oh ehm gee! Transparent Permanent Orange is my go to underpainting and glaze colour. It positively glows!

Arylide Yellow Medium

One of my recurring themes is a forest, with each tree top being a flat graphic shape of a unique blend of colours. There can be literally hundreds of trees, so having a variety of different yellows available creates more interesting variations. Arylide Yellow Medium is a welcome addition to my palette.

Thumbs Up to Tri-Art Liquids

I’ve been using Tri-Art almost exclusively since the early days of Art Noise back in the 80’s. I discovered the line through Gwartzman’s in Toronto and I’ve always believed that it is important to support Canadian-owned companies. I’ve occasionally tried different brands over the years, but have always preferred the feel and coverage of Tri-Art, especially the Liquid line, which is what I’m primarily using with my current technique. Thanks for continuing to manufacture great art materials.

Pyrrole red light

I use Pyrrole red light, Pyrrole arrange and permanent crimson often to go from light to dark in still life and landscape painting. Tri art paint is consistent, saturated and a delight to work with on the brush. I love piling it on for both saturated colour and texture.

Technical Information
Lightfastness
4 (Excellent) Tri-Art numeric scale: 4 = Excellent, 3 = Very Good. A rating of 4 = 'I' on an ASTM lightfastness scale, and a rating of 3 = 'II' on an ASTM lightfastness scale.
Opacity
Opaque Opacity codes: T = Transparent, SO = Semi-opaque, O = Opaque.
Pigments
Single Single pigment colours tend to mix cleaner and are easier to predict. Mixed pigment colours combine multiple pigments to achieve a specific hue or behaviour.
Pigment family
Organic Pigment family describes pigment type. Mineral pigments are often earth or inorganic. Organic pigments are typically synthetic organics, often higher chroma. Mixed indicates a blend.
Tinting strength
High Tinting strength is how strongly the colour influences mixtures when mixed with white or a lighter colour. Higher tinting strength means a little goes a long way.
Staining
Full Staining describes how readily a pigment binds into the surface. Higher staining is harder to lift or remove and can be more permanent in thin applications.
Colour bias
Neutral Colour bias is the undertone (warm, cool, neutral). Bias affects mixing, especially when creating clean neutrals and secondary colours.
Pigment codes
PR 254 Pigment codes are Colour Index identifiers (for example PB29, PR101). They indicate the actual pigments used, which helps compare colours across brands and predict mixing behaviour.
Sheen
G Sheen is the surface reflectivity after drying. Codes: M = Matte, SG = Semi-gloss, G = Gloss.
Description
Pyrrole Red Medium is an intensely saturated, near neutral red, with a blue leaning undertone. Pyrroles are the ultimate modern reds. Use Pyrrole Red Medium as a non-toxic replacement for Cadmium Red that is just as opaque, but much cleaner mixing. The high tinting power of Pyrrole Red Medium makes it an excellent inclusion in the modern palette, holding its own when mixed with titanium white.

Pyrrole Red Medium is part of Tri-Art Liquids, a high-flow acrylic with an ink-like consistency that pours, stains, and levels smoothly. This opaque, high tinting strength, and full handlingmakes it a strong choice for glazing, airbrush work, fluid brushwork, and mixed media.

About Acrylic Paint

This explains what acrylic paint is, and why our acrylic films are dependable over time.

What acrylic paint actually is

Acrylic paint is pigment dispersed in an acrylic polymer emulsion. As water evaporates, the acrylic particles coalesce into a continuous, flexible film that locks pigment in place and adheres to the surface.

Our binder and manufacturing approach

Tri-Art paints are 100% acrylic polymer emulsion products. We manufacture using a custom high-solids acrylic resin, and this binder standard applies across our range, including professional and student quality.

Tensile strength
A strong, resilient film that holds together well as it dries and cures.
Adhesion
Excellent grip to properly prepared surfaces, supporting durable layers.
Clarity
High clarity helps colours read cleanly, especially in thinner passages and glazing.
Non-yellowing
A stable acrylic film that stays clear over time.

Using water confidently

Because our acrylic films are built on a high-solids acrylic resin system, artists can be more comfortable using water as a working medium without feeling like they are automatically compromising film integrity. For very thin applications, build in controlled layers and let each layer dry before continuing.

Practical tip: if you are creating extremely thin washes for extended areas, consider alternating thin layers with normal-strength layers to maintain a robust film build.
