Pigment Description
Invented by the famed watercolorist William Payne, Payne's Grey first appeared in the early 19th century. Tri-Art's Payne's Grey is a mixture of phthalo blue (green shade), carbon black, and dioxazine violet. The resulting colour is near black in mass tone, but more colorful in character, with a strongly blue leaning, grey undertone. Use as a mixing compliment in place of black to darken colours while retaining more colour and vibrancy.
