Gracing the blue robes of the Madonna since the 14th century, this velvety, matte, red-shade blue once enjoyed a price higher than gold. This modern synthetic version of the pigment has been popular since the mid-nineteenth century. Use as a glaze to bring out its signature violet undertone, or as a mixing compliment.
