Print + textures + collage = divine

Chine collé is a printmaking technique that makes a print on a delicate surface (paper) and adheres it onto a heavier support. This project is a continuation of the Printing Textures Blog post. It uses the Chine Collé technique and adds more collage items to create a multi layered art piece.

Materials:

A texture print from the Printing Textures Project, heavier paper support, Tri-Art Acrylic Gel and Polymer (Semi-Gloss or matte finish), found objects, decorative paper, palette knife and paint brush.

STEP 1

Composition

Place the texture print created in the previous project onto the heavier paper that will be the main support.

Layout your elements on top of this and decide on your composition. Try to balance the placement of shapes and objects to work with the texture print. Vary the shapes, sizes and positioning of the collage elements. Having points of interest on at least three sides provides a flow and balance to the composition.

STEP 2
Adhering to the surface

Once the placement of the objects is decided it is time to adhere them to the surface. Leave your composition in place as much as possible while sticking on the elements. Start attaching the items that are behind first and working your way to the front.
NOTE: The Gel or Polymer will seep through the thin paper and make it stick to what is beneath it. Be sure to have the texture print placed onto the paper it is going on before attaching any items to it.

How to adhere objects
For thin items such as paper use Polymer Medium. This medium is thin and using a brush to apply on the back of the surface gives an even coat and prevents the paper from buckling. For thicker items use Gel Medium. It is thicker in consistency with more body to cushion and embed the heavier elements. It may be applied with a palette knife for a thicker layer or a brush for uneven items. Using these artist grade mediums to stick your objects is recommended as they will not yellow with time

Use a palette knife to apply thick amounts of Gel Medium.

Use a brush to apply gel to a thick, delicate object.

Do not leave thick brush strokes on the surface to dry. They will dry with the impression of the brush strokes. Use a fine, stiff-hair brush. If needed dampen the brush to smooth out the brush marks.

STEP 3
Apply a final coat of the Semi Gloss Polymer Medium. Use a wider brush with fine hairs to avoid deep brush strokes. This will ensure all edges are adhered to the surface and provide a protective coat for papers. Tri-Art's Polymer Medium will not yellow or become brittle with aging as industrial glues will.
NOTE: There are different finishes with Tri-Art's professional mediums. A Gloss Polymer will be very clear when dry, The Semi Gloss Polymer will have a slightly matte sheen and be translucent. A Matte Polymer will have reduced transparency and will be noticeable over dark areas due to the matting agent ingredient.

STEP 4
Keep your art work level for 24 hours to fully dry if it contains heavier objects. To display you may frame in a shadow box or mount onto a panel board.
